Studio News from Tammy Ratcliff Autumn 2014 View this email in your browser Autumn, a good time for art Changing leaves, open studios, tours, art fairs and workshops Toronto International Art Fair This Fall,  I am excited about showing some new two- and three-dimensional print works on washi at Art Toronto with Open Studio. You can find them October 24th- 27th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. If you prefer a bit of personal space for your art viewing, I suggest the Friday or Monday as good days to take in the show at your own pace.   Print City: Detroit I had a print included in a print exchange with the theme, REVIVAL.  First stop of the group show was Detroit, so my husband, Chris and I spent  a wonderful weekend full of prints and art goings-on at Print City and Dlectricity in Detroit. You can see some of my photos here on my blog. studio changes & open house weekend Chris has moved his paints and easels into our home (where he is already more productive) and I now have Sara Moore (graphic designer) and Juliet Promnitz (artist) taking his place in our 3rd floor studio. They are both new to working out of home and are enjoying the great community of creatives in the Trafalgar Building. If you are around Guelph for the annual Studio Tour, you should come visit the studio of the talented glass artist, Lynn Chidwick. I am a big fan of Lynn's work and a studio neighbour. I will be in my studio that weekend, Friday evening 7-9pm, Saturday Oct. 18th 10am-6pm and Sunday Oct. 19th 11am-5pm along with some of the wonderful new artists on the 3rd floor, Heidi Berger and Becky Comber. Come say 'hello' and see some of the new things we are working on. workshops & press time I had such a good time with workshops this past year and am anxious to get started with some more before the year is over. The month of November will have Thursdays and Sundays open to visiting printmakers wanting to use a press. Tuesday evenings for 4 weeks (4th- 25th) at 6-9pm I am hosting a mono printing workshop, and Friday afternoons for 4 weeks (7th-28th) at 1-4pm a collograph workshop. The month of November is a good time to get a group together for a holiday card and tag making workshop. Maybe you have a group of friends who might want to get together and do something fun one afternoon or evening? Please send me an email for more information or if you have any questions.  show at Flesherton Art Gallery This last bit of art news veers into Winter, but technically begins in the Fall.  I am looking forward to showing some of my more graphic botanical etchings on paper, panel and maybe a canvas, alongside the lively and colourful paintings of artist Ila Kellermann.  This two-person show at Flesherton Art Gallery will open Saturday, December 6th from 7- 9:30pm and run into late January. I hope to see you there! All of this and some walks in the gorgeous woods, will keep me out of trouble for the most part this season. Tania Love

This is one of my posts where I want to share something wonderful about an artist I know or whose work I have recently seen and enjoyed. Artist Tania Love makes beautiful work about and with the botanical world. She is inspired by the plant world and uses it in her work in a number of ways. Her blog is truly inspiring and beautiful. (This post Thinking about the trees, about trees in art, I really enjoyed.) She has a show with Rui Pimenta at Durham Art Gallery titled, Imagined Existence, until September 7th. There are some interesting workshops she is hosting starting this weekend. (More info below.) You should check her out.

Below are a couple workshops that she has coming up. 

backyard habitat: exploring local natural dye plants It’s nearly harvest season and a wonderful time to start gathering  some local plants for dye colour!  Join me for a little foraging walk  along with time in the studio to extract botanical colour. Sunday, August 24, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, $55 258 Wallace, Toronto To register, please confirm your reservation with an e-transfer for the workshop fee to: yoga@tanialove.com out of the blue: the natural indigo dye vat In this workshop we’ll look at the process of working with indigo from the growing of indigo plants, to pigment extraction, to making the vat.  This will be presented through a slide talk of my experience in Provence, France along with a hands-on approach. Spring Workshops Date Changes

It has been some time since I have hosted print workshops in my studio. I really enjoy the process and the company but have the hardest time getting the bits and pieces together in organizing. I collect names and numbers over long spans of time and then finally contact people when I have a few dates together.
This recent session had a few hurdles going for it. The other evening my mother-in-law mentioned about my workshops on Easter and Mothers Day and I was confused and then very frustrated with myself. I was so focussed on finding dates that worked with my schedule, I was looking at my phone calendar and my lovely Graven Feather calendar…neither of them have holidays on them. So that is how it happened and this is how I am fixing it. These are the new dates below.

Sunday May 4th 10am- 4pm $110. +hst

Sunday May 18th 10am -4pm  $110. +hst

or both

2 Sundays in May 4th & 18th, 10am-4pm $180. +hst

Spring Workshops

Lots of busy busy starting to happen in the studio in preparation for 
a few different printmaking workshops. I have dusted, mopped, decluttered and even painted the floors! It feels fresh and ready for Spring. I will be offering an open session for independent projects on Wednesday mornings and evenings to start April 16 and run for four weeks. Also 2 monotype and chine collé workshops, both running on two Sunday afternoons. 

For the month of June, Myles Calvert will be the resident artist in my studio. For three of those weeks, Myles will be hosting some etching workshops that you may be interested in.  You should have a look at some of Myles artwork here on his website.

Spring Printmaking Workshops  

in my super sunny studio

Open studio, semi-independent sessions in printmaking

An open printmaking session on Wednesdays in my downtown studio to begin on April 16th. 

These Wednesday sessions are an opportunity to work in a print studio with an etching or book press creating monotype, drypoint or relief prints. You are welcome to start new projects or bring previously etched and prepared plates for printing.

This is not a formal class but an opportunity to work on individual projects semi-independently. I will be present for support and any technical questions.  Previous printmaking experience is preferred.

You will need to bring your own paper for printing but ink, newsprint, gloves, and a monoprint plate, etc. will all be supplied.  If you are working on a specific plate you are welcome to bring this as well.

*Class size is a maximum of 5 people so there is plenty of opportunity to use the press.

Monotype/ Monoprint workshop with chine collé

This workshop is open to the beginner as well as the more experienced artist, with a focus on water based etching inks (Akua and Charbonnel) for monotype printmaking using the etching press. We will explore the many ways in which we can create a one-of-a-kind painterly print; additive and subtractive methods of applying ink to the plate surface, the use of brayers, brushes and stencils, chine collé, texture transferring, multiple plate printing and registration.
Monotpe printmaking can be a very spontaneous and satisfying way to work and often inspires work in other mediums because of quick results and the variety of techniques used.  Lots of wonderful papers and only the best of inks will be available for inspired experimentation.

*Class size is a maximum of 5 people so there is plenty of opportunity to use the press.
All materials, refreshments and a light lunch are included.
