Art Toronto 2014

Spent a wonderful Friday last week at Art Toronto with my sister Aubrey who was in town for a brief visit. yay. I had some new work with Open Studio at the show and was happy to visit the booth and the lovely Astrid. I wish I had taken some photos in the Open Studio booth, so many great print works. You can find lots of info, reviews and images from the show on the website artsy, in case there is something you are trying to find. Our friend Pam dropped by for a glass of bubbly (yes, they had a little prosecco station there!) and a wander around. Ran into lots of people, had some good chats and saw so many wonderful things. Later we were joined by Chris and Odin. Finished off the evening with a delightful dinner at the Swan with Renann Isaacs who was so full of energy after her first long day as an exhibiting gallery in the show.
I have been a visitor to this show for a number of years and think that this was one of my favourite ones. Here are a few shots of things we liked.

Red Lantern Sculpture by Donald Sultan
*Donald and I definitely like lots of the same things

Badland I by Andy Curlowe
*we all agreed on this artist. The colours and contrasts were wonderful and sometimes there is nothing sexier than a little Belgian linen showing through

Veiled Hood #2 by Cal Lane
*I am still a lot about the bass...I mean lace

Pam checking out a Chuck Close woodcut self portrait.
You just have to get close to look at those prints. They are pretty amazing.

this shot was about the sculpture by Benedict Parmentier. reminds me of numerous things from my youth and definitely a little bit of Tank Girl

Aubrey finally got her ride on the BGL's exhibit Canada de fantaisie/Canada Fancy which will be going to Venice for the Canadian Pavillion at the Biennial
Here is an article about the work in the Globe and Mail.

Lucien Freud etching...sigh

This was fun. Lots of goauche paintings and projections by Katya Bonnenfant or the old boys' club. More info and images here on artsy

So this is was a very short list of some of my favourite things and lots of them were decided as a group or if I felt it was ok to take my camera out at the time. Anyhow, this painting titled, Niagara Falls #5 (Currier & Ives) by Alison Schulnik was one of my favourites. I love this so much that I am putting another photo here because the colours are so different in each. This painting was in the room in such a very large, easy and beautiful way.

Autumn, a good time for art

Changing leaves, open studios, tours, art fairs and workshops

  • Toronto International Art Fair
This Fall,  I am excited about showing some new two- and three-dimensional print works on washi at Art Toronto with Open Studio. You can find them October 24th- 27th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. If you prefer a bit of personal space for your art viewing, I suggest the Friday or Monday as good days to take in the show at your own pace.
  • Print City: Detroit
I had a print included in a print exchange with the theme, REVIVAL.  First stop of the group show was Detroit, so my husband, Chris and I spent  a wonderful weekend full of prints and art goings-on at Print City and Dlectricity in Detroit. You can see some of my photos here on my blog.
  • studio changes & open house weekend
Chris has moved his paints and easels into our home (where he is already more productive) and I now have Sara Moore (graphic designer) and Juliet Promnitz (artist) taking his place in our 3rd floor studio. They are both new to working out of home and are enjoying the great community of creatives in the Trafalgar Building. If you are around Guelph for the annual Studio Tour, you should come visit the studio of the talented glass artist, Lynn Chidwick. I am a big fan of Lynn's work and a studio neighbour. I will be in my studio that weekend, Friday evening 7-9pm, Saturday Oct. 18th 10am-6pm and Sunday Oct. 19th 11am-5pm along with some of the wonderful new artists on the 3rd floor, Heidi Berger and Becky Comber. Come say 'hello' and see some of the new things we are working on.
  • workshops & press time
I had such a good time with workshops this past year and am anxious to get started with some more before the year is over. The month of November will have Thursdays and Sundays open to visiting printmakers wanting to use a press. Tuesday evenings for 4 weeks (4th- 25th) at 6-9pm I am hosting a mono printing workshop, and Friday afternoons for 4 weeks (7th-28th) at 1-4pm a collograph workshop. The month of November is a good time to get a group together for a holiday card and tag making workshop. Maybe you have a group of friends who might want to get together and do something fun one afternoon or evening? Please send me an email for more information or if you have any questions.
  • show at Flesherton Art Gallery
This last bit of art news veers into Winter, but technically begins in the Fall.  I am looking forward to showing some of my more graphic botanical etchings on paper, panel and maybe a canvas, alongside the lively and colourful paintings of artist Ila Kellermann.  This two-person show at Flesherton Art Gallery will open Saturday, December 6th from 7- 9:30pm and run into late January. I hope to see you there!

All of this and some walks in the gorgeous woods, will keep me out of trouble for the most part this season.
I hope this newsletter finds you well and outside a bit, enjoying the lovely weather.
best,
Tammy

100 prints and Wyndham's inventory sale

Today is t-shirt weather with a touch of humid starting to edge it's way into our lives. Seems too soon after the hell Winter we had that just barely left. There are very few people not happy about the change in temperature around here and we are all tired of complaining about the weather and listening to complaining. So that is that I guess. And with the changes comes a whole lot of busy which I am also content with.
This Thursday is Open Studio's big event and fundraiser 100 prints at the Palais Royale on the lakeshore in Toronto. One hundred tickets are sold to win 100 prints. Each ticket number is drawn in random order and when your ticket is drawn, you have the choice of a print from the prints that are remaining. For instance, the first ticket drawn choose a work from 100 and the last ticket drawn has the last work remaining. It is lots of fun and the venue is lovely and there is good food, drink and silent auction artwork and items as well. On Thursday evening the winner of Open Studio's National Printmaking Awards will also be announced.

The artists shortlisted for the Awards are:
-Elizabeth D'Agostino (Toronto, ON)
-Doug Guildford (Toronto, ON/ Voglers Cove, NS)
-Dan O'Neill (Halifax, NS)
-Kurt Pammer (Toronto, ON)
-Dan Steeves (Sackville, NB)
-Laura Widmer (Kelowna, BC)
100 Prints 2014

You can check out all of the wonderful work that will be available by clicking here:
Please click here to view the 100 Prints! (7.7 MB)

Another big event starting this week is the Wyndham Art Supplies Spring Sale. This is an annual sale for Chris and the gang and will run for 2 weeks leading up to their inventory day (or two...). There is a lot of inventory in the store and it is a big bonus to all of us counters if we can bring it down a bit before the counting. The sale is a nice thank you to all of their loyal customers for another year of business.
You can check out the details of the sale here on their website. They have lots of printmaking supplies and will ship as well. I will have to stock up on a few things before I leave for Picton next week. Can't wait.

New Edition 'hanging garden'

Just finished putting together a new edition. This work, titled 'hanging garden' is inspired by a monotype that I made for my show 'far from the tree' at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre in 2004. The monotype, 'hanging garden' was purchased by the MSACentre for their permanent collection and was out of my life quite quickly. It was one of my favourite pieces from the show and I had always hoped to revisit the work in an edition of some type. The edition is comprised of 10 etchings with chine collé. Each print is made up of 12 etched plates and almost that many different handmade Japanese tissue papers (washi). It has taken some time to press flat and dry out completely, but they
are now ready to leave the studio.
If the good driving weather keeps up, we will be delivering one of the first of this edition to Open Studio  and Canvas Gallery in Toronto this Friday afternoon.

Busy Day in the Big City

On Saturday my family decided to jump in the car and go to Toronto, see some art, eat some food and visit with a few friends.
Here are a few of the wonderful things we saw.
First Open Studio. Love the entranceway in 401 Richmond and the great prints by Jeannie Thib
Saw Jennifer Linton's intriguing show, Domestikia.
Love this house she has built with so much detail, especially the bed and the snakes...
Had a quick lunch visit with Astrid Ho (printmaker and curator with Open Studio's print sales) and meant to take a few photos of the print sales office and gallery but ran out of time.  If you are looking for some wonderful original works on paper, you should visit Astrid.
like this beautiful print by Susan Collett (please excuse my rough snapshots)
While in 401 Richmond, I was drawn into The Red Head Gallery from a glimpse of some fantastic paper sculptures by Xiaojing Yan for her installation 'A Grasp of Shadows'.
You can view some images from the show on the gallery website or check out Xiaojing's
website to see more of her work.
a couple different views of Xiaojing Yan's installation

Walked up to Dundas to visit Bookhou.  Have been following their gorgeous shop online for awhile and have been meaning to see the space in person and say 'hello' to Arounna. It seems that some of my friends in North England are fans of Bookhou as well and wanted me to pass on their praises.  Small world with this internet...
Purchased some sweet tea towels and a small bag for special pencils and things so they do not get lost in the bottom of my purse.
some beautiful small works by Arounna Khounnoraj
a detail of one of Arounna's works
Some friends from Guelph were having an art opening at Graven Feather, so we wandered back down to Queen St. to visit and view the work of Lydia Nieuwenkamp and Gillian Wilson
Lydia
Gillian
studio area and presses and people and wine and vegan baked goods. Yay Lydia!
more people and artwork and wine.  I did not get any great photos of the artwork so you should probably visit yourself. Always better in person. Of course you can also check out Gillian and Lydia's links above and view some work online.

28 Days Until Art Toronto!

A first-time exhibitor at Art Toronto, Open Studio presents a curated selection of print-based works from the Print Sales Gallery focusing on the unconventional use of materials – wood, metal, Japanese paper – by artists working in traditional forms of printmaking such as woodcut, screenprinting and etching. (Price range $500 - $4000)

Open Studio will feature artworks by Barbara Balfour, Nadine Bariteau, Yael Brotman, Sean Caulfield, Susan Collett, Tara Cooper, Joscelyn Gardner, Libby Hague, Brian Hoxha, Brian Kelley, Judith Klugerman, Jenn Law, Jennifer Linton, Wendy Morosoff Smith, Ann McCall, Suzanne Nacha, Sandi Ralph, Tammy Ratcliff, Bernice Sorge, Penelope Stewart, Jeannie Thib, Celeste Toogood and Janice Wong.

Highlighting Open Studio's presence at Art Toronto, Libby Hague’s Hold Me Tight, a print-based sculpture, will be included in Open Space, a newly inaugurated project space in a dedicated on-site section at the fair featuring large-scale sculpture and installation work in conjunction with galleries specially selected by a jury.

Visit us to see how these unique materials are used as core elements to express a wide range of themes, including our relationship to nature, each other and our societies. For example, Nadine Bariteau’s screenprints address the natural and man-made environments through the use of photo-based images on pliable wood. Libby Hague’s work uses cut paper to explore the vulnerability and preciousness of nature. Susan Collett’s monoprints on paper printed from stitched copper-plate templates, examine the tension between strength and fragility.

Open Studio, Canada's leading printmaking centre, is dedicated to the production, preservation and promotion of contemporary original fine art prints. All purchases support Open Studio, a charitable organization that provides services to artists and the public, including exhibitions, education, studio facilities and professional development opportunities for artists.

Open Studio National Printmaking Awards

100 Prints 2011
Shortlist Announced for Open Studio National Printmaking Awards
Best of Canadian Printmakers to be Celebrated at Open Studio’s 100 Prints
Toronto, ON – April 11, 2011 – On Wednesday, May 18, six talented Canadian artists will be recognized for their achievements in printmaking during the fourth annual Open Studio National Printmaking Awards.  The ceremony will take place at the Palais Royale in Toronto, at 100 Prints, a fundraising event in support of Open Studio.
A distinguished jury selected the shortlist from prints that have been donated to Open Studio by emerging and established artists from across Canada.  The jury members, who had the difficult job of choosing the award winners were: Robert Birch, founding director of Birch Libralato (formerly Robert Birch Gallery); Toronto-based artist Dax Morrison; and Melony Ward, publisher of Canadian Art magazine and online properties.
The artists shortlisted for the Open Studio National Printmaking Awards are:
  • Susan Collett (Toronto, ON)
  • Tara Cooper (Toronto, ON)
  • Rocky Zenyk Dobey (Toronto, ON)
  • Erik Edson (Sackville, NB)
  • Laine Groeneweg  (Toronto, ON)
  • Libby Hague (Toronto, ON)
Said Melony Ward, “As a juror, it was a treat to spend the day with 100 incredible works of art. Printmaking continues to thrive through Open Studio.”  Dax Morrison commented: “In this age of the digital, it's refreshing and delightful to experience prints produced by hand.  To be able to spend a full day surrounded by such works was an honour. Hopefully, those attending 100 Prints will also experience the thrill of seeing and owning works that are truly inspiring.”
"It was a great pleasure to participate on the Open Studio National Printmaking Awards jury this year,” said Robert Birch. “The entries were many and the quality of work was, frankly, higher than expected, making the decision much more challenging than anticipated.  Congratulations to Open Studio and all the participating artists for their hard work in preparing for such a strong competition.”  All six artists have a chance at winning one of three cash prizes of $3,000 (first prize), $1,500 (second prize) or $500 (third prize) or an honourable mention.
100 Prints
Open Studio, a not-for-profit centre for contemporary printmaking practice, provides affordable access to printmaking facilities, programs and services for artists from across Canada and abroad, as well as exhibitions, education programs and print sales.  Celebrating the 26th anniversary of the event this year, 100 Prints is Open Studio’s most important fundraising activity, and helps to support this artist-run centre’s vital artistic programming.
The event features 100 original prints donated by nationally and internationally recognized Canadian artists, and because only 100 tickets are sold, each ticket holder is guaranteed to take home an original fine art print.   Tickets are drawn in random order on the evening of the event, which creates an air of anticipation; as each ticket is drawn, excited guests have one minute to choose a print.
This year’s 100 Prints promises to be the best 100 Prints yet—and one of the best art events of the year.  The festive night also includes fabulous prizes, a raffle, delicious hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a silent auction of framed prints specially created by Open Studio artists for this fundraising event. Tickets are now available—the $375 ticket price includes admission for two and a guarantee that you will take home an original piece of original artwork with a minimum value of $375.  As tickets to the event are limited to 100, they will sell out fast, and are nearly 50% sold already. General admission tickets are also available for $50. For full details and event ticket information, visit the 100 Prints microsite.
